First off, what is boudoir photography?
Boudoir photography is a style of photography that masters the art of the reveal. It's up to the client how small or large that reveal will be. Boudoir photography captures the art of seduction, intimacy, and the beauty of the human body.
Ultimately, boudoir photography is all about how the client feels about however they're presenting themselves. The goal is to make the client feel comfortable, sexy, and confident.
What do I wear to a boudoir session?
You don't have to limit yourself to one outfit . I recommend bringing 4-5 outfits that have elements of layers that you can remove, like sweaters, robes, t-shirts, etc.
Choose outfits that you feel comfortable and confident in. You don't have to show anything you don't want to. I've had clients wear a baggy sweater and panties, revealing only a shoulder, while other clients have chosen to get close to nude, or wear a chain-laced thong and that's it. If you feel uncomfortable, you may not enjoy the session.
I'm worried I'll be super nervous. What can I do to calm my nerves?
Have a playlist with your favorite music ready, and ask your photographer if you can put it on to get you in the mood for the session. I've had clients bring hip hop, slow jazz, heavy metal: whatever playlist that makes *the client* feel comfortable.
It's okay to bring booze. I've had clients bring champagne, beer, wine, etc., to help them relax during the session, and I respected their wishes to have it there. We ended up using the wine/wine glass as a prop for some photos, and it was really seductive!
How can I make the shoot be more to my personality?
It's okay to bring props, like jewelry, flower petals, anything that defines your relationship. I had a client bring a favorite board game, set it up, and do some photos in risque lingerie while playing the game. I've had another client who brought wings and pizza to use the food as a fun playtime (and blocking body parts, which was really funny and a great ice breaker).
Research the photos you like and bring them with you to the session! It will help you remember your favorite poses, and help your photographer understand your style and vision.
Where should I do a boudoir session?
Check with your photographer if they have a location they prefer. Some photographers can recommend hotels in the area that have the style you're looking for, while others have studios.
Some photographers can take photos inside your own home, or outside on your property.
Airbnbs are also great options for furniture, floors, and decor that's a little more unique.
